Why adopt from Pet Haven?

One of the main benefits we offer to someone looking for a pet is our network of volunteer foster homes. We do not have a shelter, so we utilize foster homes to house the animals until permanent homes can be found.

Our foster home program is a benefit to the adoptive family because it provides a personality profile of the animal in a home environment. Those interested in adopting a pet can talk to someone who is familiar with that cat or dog’s needs and behavior. The foster home will know if the pet is good with other animals or children, whether the pet is housetrained, and can answer many of your questions about the pet because the pet is living in their home. This is an important element in matching the animal’s needs to the needs of the people.

Plus, every animal in Pet Haven’s adoption program has been examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, treated for any known medical ailments, implanted with a microchip ID, and spayed or neutered. We also provide a 10 day health guarantee for each animal adopted from us. Should your newly adopted pet require medical attention during this time, it will be provided at no charge by prior arrangement and at a Pet Haven-approved veterinary clinic.

Where do the dogs and cats come from?

The animals in Pet Haven’s adoption program come from many places. Some are strays unclaimed at local animal pounds or rescued by kind-hearted persons. Pet Haven also collaborates with other rescue groups and shelters and some of the animals come to us from those organizations. Some pets become homeless and come to Pet Haven following the death or serious illness of their human guardian. Others come from homes where they are no longer wanted for a variety of reasons or where financial hardship prevents them from providing proper care for the pet.

How do I adopt a cat or dog from Pet Haven?

The first step is to see if we have a dog or cat that interests you. Pet Haven has many wonderful cats, dogs, kittens and puppies looking for new homes. Click the links above to see photos and descriptions of the animals currently available for adoption. Each description includes an e-mail address that you can use to ask questions about the dog or cat. You can also call us at (952) 831-3825 and leave a voicemail message. Whether you e-mail (our preference) or call, a volunteer will get back to you. Everyone at Pet Haven is a volunteer, so please be patient as it may take a day or two.

If you are interested in adopting a particular animal from Pet Haven, please click on the link abovebelow to complete our on-line adoption application. Our responsibility is to match the needs of the cat or dog with your family and home situation. A Pet Haven volunteer familiar with the animal will review your application and contact you for an interview. If you and the pet seem like a good match, an appointment will be made for you to meet the animal and if all goes well you can adopt at that time.

We also hold public adoption events on weekends. The foster home volunteers bring the pets to these events and potential adopters have a chance to meet the animals and talk with the foster families. If a good match is found, the pet can be adopted that day. The schedule of upcoming adoption events is in the column to the left.

Each adopter is required to sign Pet Haven’s adoption contract and pay an adoption fee at the time the cat or dog goes home with you. The adoption contract obligates you to properly care for the animal you are adopting from Pet Haven and explains the health guarantee.

Pet Haven reserves the right to refuse any adoption we do not feel is appropriate. We want happy pets and happy adopters!

How much does it cost to adopt a pet from Pet Haven?

The adoption fees vary depending on the age and breed of the animal. Every pet placed through Pet Haven has current vaccinations, a microchip ID, and has been examined by a veterinarian to make sure that it is healthy at the time of adoption. Pet Haven is committed to controlling pet overpopulation so every pet is spayed or neutered. We also register the microchip to the animal’s new family as a part of the adoption fee. Pet Haven depends on adoption fees and donations to provide all of this vet care.

I don’t live near Minneapolis/St. Paul. Can I still adopt from Pet Haven?

Pet Haven only places animals into homes within about 60 miles of the Twin Cities area. Pet Haven is committed to providing post-adoption services and therefore the new home must be within reach of our volunteers and veterinary clinics. These post-adoption services include our health guarantee, behavior counseling, and if necessary, return of the animal to Pet Haven. Please visit www.PetFinder.com to find a cat or dog looking for a new home in your area.
