Pet Haven’s mission is to rescue and re-home dogs and cats, spay and neuter to reduce overpopulation, promote companion animal welfare, and advocate on behalf of companion animals. Celebrating more than 65 years of operation, Pet Haven has a current year budget of $325,000 and endowment accounts of approximately $500,000. An active volunteer pool of 200+ volunteers support Pet Haven’s operations and fundraising efforts. We want to build upon that historic foundation with an executive director who can help us advance our growth strategies. With an Operations Manager and a capable and experienced team of volunteers in place, the Board envisions that the executive director’s time and attention will be heavily weighted towards the external aspects of the job—fundraising, relationship building, and marketing—which are highlighted in the priorities listed below. Advance Pet Haven’s mission and our reach throughout the Twin Cities region under the guidance of the 3-year strategic plan created in October 2017. Develop and expand donor relationships and bolster Pet Haven’s fundraising infrastructure in support of our efforts to build a broader base of philanthropic support. Bring clarity to the Pet Haven “brand” and develop and implement message and marketing strategies that support achievement of our goals. Build board and volunteer capacity and inspire and support growth and meaningful engagement. Develop an excellent rapport with our volunteers and staff and provide them with the support and ongoing development opportunities they need to excel in their positions. More detailed information about Pet Haven can be found at www.PetHavenMN.org Executive Director Position Summary: The Executive Director leads the organization, ensuring that Pet Haven can continue its strong tradition of promoting companion animal welfare. The Executive Director is accountable to the Board of Directors for the entirety of the management and operation of Pet Haven, with guidance and support provided by the Board. A significant aspect of this role is responsible for the continued financial viability of Pet Haven, through both effective management of current assets and development of new sources of revenue. The Executive Director also has oversight of Pet Haven’s organizational programs, all of which serve to further Pet Haven’s efforts to fulfill its mission, vision and goals. The Executive Director directly manages one paid staff member, the Director of Operations, and has oversight to all volunteers. Required Qualifications To lead Pet Haven requires a comprehensive set of skills and abilities. We expect that the successful candidate will bring the following: Demonstrable passion for our mission and the animals in our care Understanding of and agreement with Pet Haven’s mission, vision, and values. Successful development and fundraising experience. Substantial experience and a track record of success in developing donor relationships, face-to-face fundraising, and managing all aspects of a fundraising operation Experience in recognizing and maximizing public relations and marketing opportunities Demonstrated ability to collaborate internally and with external partners to further the organization’s vision, mission, and goals. Prior experience in managing volunteer teams with professionalism, compassion and a sense of humor Strong communication skills, including public speaking, oral and written communication. Strong interpersonal skills: a good listener and a proven relationship-builder who can successfully engage with organizations, business leaders, and individual donors to advance shared goals Experience in budget development, financial analysis, and implementing strategies to ensure program and financial alignment Technical proficiency and skill at developing competencies in new software platforms Proficiency in leveraging key social media platforms (primarily Facebook and Instagram) for marketing and community engagement (including volunteer engagement) Ability to work a flexible schedule including weekend and evening hours as needed. Preferred Experience and Skills: Experience with the following software applications Quickbooks Sparkie (animal management software) Neon (donor management software) Previous experience in a rescue or shelter environment and/or a nonprofit organization (ideally working directly with a board of directors) will be considered a significant plus Previous experience in strategic planning and the ability to guide a planning process in partnership with board and volunteers College degree in a field related to management, leadership, communication, public relations, or animal welfare; or a combination of training and experience substantially equivalent.
