Volunteer Spotlight: Gary

Volunteer Spotlight: Gary

Prior to becoming a volunteer with Pet Haven, Gary was an adopter and financial supporter. As he learned more and more about our organization, he got more involved; eventually fostering dogs with us. Today Gary is active in many roles with Pet Haven – from providing short term foster care, to helping lend a paw at our special events – but where he is found most often is helping organize our foster program supplies shed. Gary helps to ensure supplies stay organized and stocked, and he also helps run supplies to foster volunteers throughout the Twin Cities.

PH: What is the name of the people and animals in your home?

G: I live by myself with Bear; my sweet little brown Chihuahua

PH: Why did you decide to volunteer with Pet Haven?

G: I adopted Tug the Beagle from Pet Haven in 2011, and he had many anxiety-related issues. After he passed on, I decided to become a foster parent. Bear and another Chihuahua mix, Blu, were my first two fosters. Bear stayed with me for 7 months before I broke down and adopted him.

PH: What inspires you to volunteer with animals?

G: I grew up in farm country and have always loved all types of animals. I have always been partial to dogs, but I also know how many there are out in the real world that are being abused, neglected, etc.  I want to do what I can to help.

PH: What is your most memorable volunteer experience?

G: Bear, my first foster, and a total foster failure. J
