How do I adopt a cat or dog from Pet Haven?

  1. View our adoptable pets! Check out the links for our available cats and dogs, where you can view their photos and read their bios. You can meet some of our adoptable animals at adoption events. Our adoption events are a lot of fun! Cat adoption events are at our welcoming new facility and our dog adoption events are held at local breweries. We do this because it's a great way to see how our dogs are in public and meet some great people too!
  2. Fill out an application.  If you would like to meet a dog or cat that interests you, complete our online adoption application (cat adoption form, dog adoption form). Your application is not binding—it is just the first step in learning more about an animal. We often get several applications for one pet so please understand filling out an application does not guarantee you will be able to adopt this pet.
  3. Meet and greet time: A Pet Haven volunteer will respond to your application to let you know if the pet is still available and discuss the animal in greater detail. If the pet is still available and you are interested in learning more we will schedule a “meet and greet.”  This meeting can take place virtually, at home, at an adoption event, or at our beautiful facilty.
  4. Home visit: If you are adopting a dog or a cat, Pet Haven will arrange a home visit. This can be done virtually or in person. The home visit helps us ensure that your home will be a good fit based on what we know about the cat or dog. It’s also a chance for you to ask us any questions and receiveimportant pointers before you bring your new pet home!
  5. Submit paperwork and adoption fee: An adoption contract is completed and the adopter pays an adoption fee. Our adoption fee includes the cost of the spay/neuter surgery, microchip implant, and all age-appropriate vaccinations.
  6. Congratulations, you’ve got a new family member! You'll receive lots of support leading up to and after your adoption. Once you adopt from Pet Haven, you're always a part of our family and we'll be here for any support or questions!

Why adopt from Pet Haven?

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue. Our animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes and their foster families get to know the dogs and cats learning important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

Where do the dogs and cats come from?

Our animals come from shelters, animal control facilities, and are surrendered by owners.

I don’t live in the Twin Cities. Can I still adopt from Pet Haven?

Yes! We are committed to providing post-adoption services that include our health guarantee and behavior counseling. Therefore, we prefer our animals' new home to be within reach of our veterinary partners and volunteers. For this reason, we prefer applicants to live within a 150 miles radius. However, we will consider applicants up to 250 miles from the Twin Cities with staff approval.

  • The applicant agrees that any post-adoption vet care that Pet Haven would cover financially needs to be done with one of our partners in the metro area
  •  Any post-adoption continuation of already enrolled behavioral / training that Pet Haven would cover financially needs to be done with one of our partners in the metro area
  •  The applicant will need to come to the metro area for an in-person meet and greet with foster parent and dog or cat;  for dogs, if there is another dog(s) in the applicant's home, dog(s) will need to accompany the owner to the meet and greet in the metro area
  • Home visits are completed virtually and the foster parent feels confident in the information collected-
  • Adopters will need to come to the metro area or a location comfortable for the foster to pick up their new family member if the adoption process is completed/approved.

How much does it cost to adopt?

Adoption fees vary depending on the age and breed of the animal. Every pet placed through Pet Haven is spayed or neutered, is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip ID, and has been examined by a veterinarian to make sure it is healthy at the time of adoption. You can view our adoption fees here.

Returning an animal

We ask that Pet Haven Pets come back to Pet Haven and not given to another rescue or listed on Craigslist. While we work hard to ensure great matches are made between animals and their adopters, we know that circumstances sometimes require people to make the difficult choice to return their pet. Pet Haven will work with adopters to welcome back any animal adopted from Pet Haven into our care if the need arises. Adopters are offered a 10-day "grace period" post-adoption and can immediately return their pet if necessary. If past the 10 day period there may be a wait while we find a foster home. Previous adopters can learn more about the surrender - return process here.
