Why adopt from Pet Haven?

Pet Haven is a foster-based rescue where animals live with foster families until they are placed in permanent homes. Foster families get to know the dogs and cats in their care and learn important information about the animals. For example, the foster family will know if the dog or cat is good with other animals or children, and will have a good idea of what kind of training, attention, and special needs the pet may require. This makes our foster families great resources for potential adopters!

Every animal in Pet Haven’s adoption program is examined by a veterinarian, vaccinated, treated for any known medical ailments, implanted with a microchip ID, and spayed or neutered. We also provide a 10-day health guarantee for each adopted animal. Within the first 10 days of adoption, if you or your vet discover a medical condition that existed prior to adoption, we’ll work with our vet partner to provide medical attention at no charge to you.

Where do the dogs and cats come from?

We receive many of our animals from shelters, animal control facilities, indian Reservations, and owner surrenders.

Once a Pet Haven Animal, Always a Pet Haven Animal

While we work hard to ensure great matches are made between animals and their adopters, we know that circumstances sometimes require people to make the difficult choice to return their pet. Pet Haven will work with adopters to welcome back any animal adopted from Pet Haven into our care if the need arises. Adopters are offered a 10-day “grace period” post-adoption and can return their pet if necessary. Previous adopters can learn more about the surrender process here.

I don’t live near Minneapolis/St. Paul. Can I still adopt from Pet Haven?

We are committed to providing post-adoption services that include our health guarantee and behavior counseling. Therefore, an animal’s new home must be within reach of our volunteers and veterinary clinics. For this reason, Pet Haven limits its animal placements to locations within 60 miles of the Twin Cities.

How much does it cost to adopt a pet from Pet Haven?

Adoption fees vary depending on the age and breed of the animal. Every pet placed through Pet Haven is spayed or neutered, is up-to-date on vaccinations, has a microchip ID, and has been examined by a veterinarian to make sure it is healthy at the time of adoption. Cat adoption fees range from $130-$150.   Dog adoption fees range from $220 for a senior/special needs dog, $400 for an adult dog, and $450 for a puppy.

How do I adopt a cat or dog from Pet Haven?

  1. Meet our adoptable pets! Check out the links for our adoptable cats and dogs, where you can view their photos and read their bios. We also encourage you to come to our adoption events.
  2. Fill out an application.  If you would like to meet a dog or cat that interests you, complete our online adoption application (here for cats, here for dogs). Your application is not binding—it is just the first step in learning more about an animal.
  3. Meet and greet time: A Pet Haven volunteer will respond to your application to discuss the animal in greater detail and schedule a “meet and greet.”  This meeting can take place at a home, adoption event, or out in the community.
  4. Home visit: If you are adopting a dog, Pet Haven will arrange a home visit. The home visit helps us ensure that your home will be a good fit based on what we know about the dog, and it’s also a chance for you to ask us any questions and receive last-minute pointers before you bring your new pet home!
  5. Submit paperwork and adoption fee: An adoption contract is completed and the adopter pays an adoption fee. Our adoption fee includes the cost of the spay/neuter surgery, microchip implant, and all age-appropriate vaccinations.
  6. Congratulations, you’ve got a new family member! You’ll receive lots of support leading up to and after your adoption. Once you adopt from Pet Haven, you’re always a part of our family and we’ll be here for any support or questions!
