Pet Haven dogs very recently took in 5 new puppies from Red Lake Rosie.

 

Puppies and kittens have continued  to be born and surrendered in record numbers everywhere this year.  Mild winter?  It's hard to know but it stretches the resources of everyone  to try and find them humane societies and limited admission groups to take them.  Everyone is working on spay neuter but so far our efforts have not slowed down the numbers being born and abandoned.

 

 

Whiskers, not pictured, is a Red Lake Special (german shepherd/husky mix) and the 4 babies are 2 boys with typical german shepherd markings and 2 blonde girls who seem to look like little yellow labs.  It will be fun to watch one develop in your own  home - will the pup have floppy ears?  stand up ears? be thickercoated like a husky? shorter haired like a lab?

Part of the excitement is in watching that new member of your family develop!  You'll be able to go to puppy classes and help them learn to walk on a leash and then to obedience classes to be canine good citizens.  You'll want tips on how to potty train and on what makes good chew toys for this developing pup.  Will you have a potential therapy dog?   Your vet and your obedience trainer will become your best friends as they lead you through this adventure!

 

Kittens continue to arrive also, locally and from other shelters or the public.

Diffy is feeling better after her bout of intestinal upset last week.  She's still on medication to calm her tummy and intestines but appears to be making a full recovery.

 

 

 

 

3 new kittens came in last week from the spay neuter event at Red Lake.

Savannah was left behind when Monique wouldn't accept her after she had been missing from the litter for over 24 hours.  She went with another mom but came to us in very fragile shape.  Meds, sub q fluids and force feeding didn't win the battle and her foster was with her while she was euthanized on Sat.  It's sad for everyone when that happens but especially sad for those who have put their hearts on the line as they hold her in their hands.

Twinkle was surrendered and came along, she too is underweight but at 10 weeks is a little bigger and we hope she will make it through.  She's had an upset tummy with all the round worms living in her and is on anti nausea meds and sub q fluids and is being force fed and is holding her own today and even licking at a little food although the amount she thinks is enough to eat wouldn't keep a mouse going for long!

Sparkle was a 'neighborhood' kitten and was fed by kind folks who would put out a few scraps when they saw her.  She was brought in because a dog had injured her and is considerably underweight also.  She has a very sore back leg but is using it and the vet doesn't believe it is broken.  She's eating on her own and is getting through her initial deworming more easily.  She's a mostly white (dirty) calico with lots of spunk.

Another female adult with unusual brown and cream/gray  splotches and blue eyes came in with a knife wound. She had seen a vet for surgery once, the tissue where the stitches were placed died and drains and more sutures were placed at the Spay Neuter clinic last week.  She's at a local vet clinic we work with, has had the drains removed, is receiving laser treatments to promote healing and will have her stitches out in another week.  She'll go into a Pet Haven foster home then and we'll get to know her before she goes up for adoption.
